Picking the ‘perfect venue’ for your dinner date or when you want to go lunchin’ with the gang is getting tougher by the day! The Sassy Spoon, a hot favorite from Mumbai joins the league of big brands that are taking Pune by storm. Chef Irfan Pabaney & Rachel Goenka are ready to sweep you off your feet with their venture.
I was recently invited for the Preview Tasting by Carpe Diem to sample the eclectic menu at Sassy Spoon. In a word, this brand is here to stay and a definite try for those who have an exquisite taste in food.
P.S I am writing this blog with that funky Meghan Trainor song playing in the backdrop, which explains my inspiration behind the Title of this post.
The indoor set up is definitely more laid back than the outdoor. The settings are a perfect contrast to each other. The outside exudes the ‘Shakespearen’ vibe while the indoor boasts of a massive library- like wall & the very prominent Volkswagen-ey bar. A very creatively done up place with intricate detailings in every corner.
The menu is exhaustive spanning across European, Mediterranean, South East Asian and Indian cuisines. The Sassy Teaspoon which is parked right at the entrance is the answer to all your dessert cravings. Be it an All Day Breakfast Menu or High Teas, Sassy Spoon is all set to take you on board.
The pricing is definitely on the higher end but, again its one of those places where you wouldn’t want to crash unplanned.
Undoubtedly Sassy Spoon is serving some dishes which are very new & unique to Pune’s palate. To name a few, the ‘Malaysian Otak Otak’ which serves grilled fish and shrimps in a paste-like version was a first for me. The ‘Thai Style Tenderloin Murtabak’ is a great take on the Yemen and Thai cuisine fusion. Also, the ‘Sri Lankan Spiced Chicken Poi’ makes for a great appetiser!
The ‘Soul Cooler’ mocktail recommended by Mr. Pranav Mody (mixologist) is divine. With fresh ingredients that seem right off a Desi- healthy salad bowl, the drink has that spice as well as the punch to get any teetotaler high!
Other praiseworthy items from the massive spread at the Preview tasting would definitely be the ‘7 Textured Hazelnut & Chocolate Cake’, I wouldn’t label it the best but definitely recommended for hardcore chocolate fanatics. The ‘Sassy Stacks’ of red velvet are good to go, not too sweet and just about right!
Scintillating Six At Sassy Spoon
Here’s my pick on the ‘Top Six’ at Sassy Spoon. These are the dishes that you simply can’t afford to miss, truly appetizing flavors and a never before union of ingredients.
They’ve got all the ‘Sass’ that Pune was missing out!
- Very Berry Khatta
Pranav Mody, the mixologist nailed it with this drink. Teetotallers are in for a surprise with this eccentric take on the ‘kala khatta’. It is truly a blast of flavors and though the mocktail spread at Sassy Spoon remained impressive, the “very berry khatta” had me at the first sip!
- Tenderloin Jerky
The showstopper and the unanimous choice of those at the Sassy Spoon Preview. Strips of tenderloin with coriander and lemon had an absolute ‘perky’ finish. The cherry tomato and and chilli dip makes this a ‘to-die-for’ combination.
- Cajun Prawns
Rich, thick and loaded with spices – a great base for prawns. A very balanced dish inspite of being heavily loaded with butter. The gravy is lip smacking and with the crunchy baguette on the side, you wouldn’t want to share this delicacy with anyone.
- Rava Crusted Bombil
I don’t despise but have also never been a bombil fan, until now. Its probably the best combination of mushy & crispy in a single dish. Absolutely tender fish in delicious rava coating with raw mango chutney on the side is highly recommended when at Sassy!
- Confit Garlic Fettuccine with Chicken
Fettuccine cooked al dente in a very appetizing base of chicken, garlic, mushrooms and French beans. The base is creamy without any hint of bland. A Must Try at Sassy Spoon.
- Sticky Toffee Pudding
This dish is nothing but a piece of Art. Date and Toffee pudding loaded with caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream and candied ginger! One of the most unique and oddly satisfying desserts I have tasted in recent times.
